Afghanistan Is one of the big producers of hand knotted area rugs and carpets in the region. Many of the Afghan rugs and carpets are also woven by Afghan refugees who live in Pakistan and Iran. Afghan rugs are genuine, charismatic and remarkably low-priced compare to rugs produced in other regions and neighbor countries. One of the most striking and unique rugs within oriental rugs is the Shindand or Adraskan (named after local Afghan towns), hand woven in the Herat area, in west of Afghanistan. Eccentrically stretched out human and animal figures are their distinctive characteristic looks.
Another distinctive rug from Afghanistan is Balochi area rugs, most notably Balochi prayer rugs and carpet. They are hand knotted by Afghanistan’s Balochi Tribes, residing in south-west of the country. Large numbers of the weavers in Afghanistan are the Ersari Turkmen, but other minority groups like Chub Bash and Kizil Ayaks are also involved in the industry of weaving rugs. In addition, Uzbeks, Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, and Arabs label their rugs according to their ethnic background and sell then in Afghani rug markets internationally.
